La Memo Brasserie - a brief history.....
The name ‘La Memo’ originates from the mountain range through Turkey called Memo-Musa Dagi; it runs through the country to the Mediterranean sea and is covered in olive groves.
La Memo Brassiere was opened in January 2008 by Mehmet Yalcin and Gurbuz Vural, both from Turkey.
Gurbuz comes who comes from Istanbul started his way up the ladder when he was just 12 years old, helping out in local kitchens near his home.
In 1997 he moved to Liverpool to work at Caesars Palace restaurant, he then moved on to Est Est Est, becoming Sous chef. then to Left Bank as Head chef where he remained until late 2007, when he had an offer to become partner and Head chef with his long time friend Mehmet.
Mehmet who is from Marmaris started in the restaurant trade in 1990 as a dishwasher, he then went on to open The White House Restaurant, Marmaris in 1996.
In 1998 he moved from Turkey and relocated in Liverpool where he started work at Caesars Palace meeting Gurbuz.
In 1999 Mehmet moved to Swansea, where he became a waiter at La Brassiere, Wind Street. In 2004 he opened his first successful venture Café Memo in Morriston, which is still thriving today.
In late 2007 Mehmet & Gurbuz acquired the premises previously known as The Bistro, this is when La Memo Brassiere at Port Talbot was established, opening in January 2008.
Mehmet & Gurbuz aim is to offer something which Port Talbot has been crying out for ‘good food’.
La Memo’s combination of Mediterranean, Italian, Greek, Turkish and French cuisine gives diners a choice to suit all tastes.
Along with fine wines, beers and champagne, in a warm, friendly & relaxed atmosphere - what more could you ask for.
