Take a Memo: The food is a joy and so delicious
South Wales Evening Post - Thursday, January 29, 2009, 07:00

Where?

La Memo Brasserie, 20 Forge Road, Port Talbot.

Atmosphere?

Sandwiched between a row of shops and a hairdresser's, the inside is warm and comfortable, and has a rustic feel. The aromas from the kitchen enticed us to sit down and wait eagerly for the menu.

Crowd?

We visited on a weeknight, and apart from us, there was a table of 10. But the phone was ringing throughout the night with bookings — it seems best to book a table in advance.

Menu?

Starters include prawn cakes and mushroom crostini, while tempting mains include cannelloni, steak, salmon and chicken. There are also specials to look out for.

What did we have?

For starters I had the duck spring roll and my companion had the mushroom crostini. Both came with a small salad and dressing. Mine came with Thai sweet chilli sauce and hoisin sauce which decorated the plate nicely. For main I had the pork loin with gravy, which sat on a garlic and herb mash potato served with vegetables. My companion had the fillet steak, which came with a pepper sauce, roasted potatoes and vegetables.

Disability access?

Seating is on two floors, but there is a disabled toilet on the ground floor.

The verdict:

In a word — delicious! The duck spring roll was crispy and full of flavour, and the mushrooms on the crostini were amazing. Both meats were tender and rich in their sauces. The presentation of the dishes has to be mentioned, though, as all the dishes looked top quality. We decided to pass on dessert.

The bill:

Our bill for two starters and two mains came to a reasonable £32.

Last word?

La Memo is a little gem in the heart of Port Talbot, popular with the locals. The staff are friendly and they also have an inviting lunch menu. Thumbs-up all round.
